About this deal

As the name implies this is the unrated, un-broadcast extended edition of this episode, if you ask me this is always the one to watch! A widescreen remaster of Battlestar Galactica is something that some fans have wanted for a while now. Like their Star Trek brethren, people are absolutely positive that it can, and should be done, and that the purists are just holding out on them. But unlike Star Trek: TNG, with its plethora of light stands, crew members and other flotsam floating just out of frame, there are at least parts of Battlestar that were always intended to be widescreen. In the 1970s and 80s, it was fairly common for broadcast pilots, miniseries, and 2-part episodes to be repurposed for theatrical release overseas. Until very late in the game, the original plan for Galactica was for it to be a series of 4 TV movies, which later became the pilot, Lost Planet of the Gods, Gun on Ice Planet Zero, and War of the Gods. All of which were planned and shot (or at least protected for) 1.85:1. But this unfortunately is part of what makes this widescreen version such a mixed bag when compared to its 4:3 counterparts – the rest of the episodes weren’t planned for widescreen in this way. Extended Episode: 'A Disquiet Follows My Soul' (HD, Disc 1) – The unrated extended version of this episode. Sometime in their history, a civilized planetary system consisting of a dozen tribes of humanity known as the Twelve Colonies of Kobol created a race of sentient robotic beings they called Cylons. The Cylons were built to make the humans' lives easier, but one day the machines had enough of slavery and rebelled against their masters. The uprising escalated into a war and then suddenly -- the Cylons vanished without a trace.

Anyway, enough about this seminal show; what about the collection? If you thought you’d seen a complete series box set then think again, because this one is on a completely different level to any I’ve experience. Battlestar Galactica': Remastered (HD, 6 min.) – Sadly, this is the only brand-new bonus feature on this entire release. However, it does give a nice behind-the-scenes look at how the series is being updated to widescreen for the 'next generation' of viewers. English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, French, Italian, Spanish (Castilian), Spanish (Latin), Brazilian, and Portuguese DTS Digital Surround 2.0 (Original Series Full Frame Episodes)

Sound

Glen Larson on the Creation of 'Battlestar Galactica' (SD, 6 min.) – The series creator/producer talks about where the inspiration for the series came from. (Ported over from the 2003 DVD release.) In terms of glitches, the widescreen versions still contain a lot of dirt and debris on the print, even though according to the bonus materials on this release damaged frames have been repaired (so why not repair all of the problems?). Film grain is present and perhaps a little more evident that it should be, given the zooming in on the original frame (or at least making an area of the image larger than intended) that is a necessity here. Noise is also somewhat of an issue here and there, as is aliasing. Extended Episode: 'Unfinished Business' (HD, Disc 3) – The unrated extended version of this episode. Production (SD, 9 minutes) – A brief production vignette covering filming in high-definition, the sets, make-up, and more.

Audio Commentary: 'Razor: Extended Version' – Commentary with Ronald D. Moore and writer Michael Taylor. My Favorite Episode So Far (SD, 11 minutes) – The cast and crew reflect on their favorite episodes of the series. Deleted Scenes (SD, Disc 2, 18 minutes) – Deleted scenes from episodes '33,' 'Water,' 'Act of Contrition,' and 'You Can't Go Home Again.' Another reason I believe the original series has aged well is due to the fact that most of the main characters are very open about their religious beliefs, something that probably wouldn't fly on network television today, even though the religion on Battlestar Galactica is more Egyptian in nature than it is Christian. 'Battlestar Galactica' was also very much a family show…often to its detriment (a number of episodes are a little too geared toward younger viewers)…which resulted in characters who actually cared about one another, not the least of whom was Commander Adama (played by the late, great Lorne Greene), a leader not all that different than the father figure he played on the legendary 'Bonanza' TV series. I wish I could quote a source, but I read years ago that a plan for a continuation of the original format in a second year was in place. The Cylons were to be left behind as the fleet moved further away from their home system. Colonel Tigh and Athena were going to leave the series somehow. I do have an excerpt of an interview from Story Editor Terrence McDonnell where he says that the Pegasus would appear in the season opener, and that Glen Larson wanted to kill off Sheba. Battlestar Galactica: Remastered (1080p; 5:44): Digital Mastering Supervisor Vishal Chathle and his team discuss the challenges and some of the steps taken to create new HD masters for the series. This feature is exclusive to the Widescreen Edition.

Audio Commentary: 'Islanded in a Stream of Stars: Extended Version' (Disc 2) – Commentary with Ronald D. Moore. Still, Universal’s new Blu-ray release can be looked upon as a victory – one of choice. The ability to finally watch this series in HD in dual versions meant to please both enthusiasts and newcomers is something for which the studio should be commended.
