I enjoyed Broken much more than Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things, which I read years ago and considered too one-note. Broken had some of those elements and sections that felt draggy, and I'll admit that I even skimmed a few parts. However, the bright spots of the story overshadowed the less interesting sections. Basically the secret to a long-lasting marriage is memory loss and well-meaning lies and beach margaritas.” Detective Lou is a great invention, although I don't recollect if he is on loan from another Winslow novel. If not, he deserves more room, he needs to be let out (like me in my confinement) and have his own novel. That's not to say that there aren't difficult parts. She has long been open about her health and mental health struggles and some of those chapters are incredibly painful. Jenny: Jesus, I can't even use poop correctly. first story, broken, in this collection was strong like throwing a punch. second one - crime 101 was a very fine and good story but got weaker towards the end. the third the sun Diego zoo was hilarious real fun and for me the best. clever and witty. the next two reminded me too much of other writing of Winslow like the down patrol In a serious vein, Jenny excoriates her insurance company, which avoids paying for her medication and treatments....a phenomenon that's probably familiar to much of the general public. Oh brother, this is one funny and creative woman! My god! If I could shove this book in your face right now, I would. A review can’t do it justice. I took forever to start this review because I kept rereading chapters—and let me tell you, I seldom do that. Too much new stuff in my queue. Time is precious—so who wants to do re-reads? But I could not resist. My choices seem to be to either shank the person who is making me scared or get rid of all my fluids so I can run faster. Thank you for writing about the embarrassing things you do like starting fires in your house and making me feel better about when I start fires in my house (the latest was a toaster fire because setting it sideways shoots the hash brown patties out onto a plate like it would be in the beginning of Pee Wee's Big Adventure but it also sets all the crumbs and grease on fire). Savages was my least-favorite Winslow novel, second least favorite may have been the prequel, The Kings of Cools, so I really wasn’t welcoming the return of the protagonists from this tale.To me, one of the most challenging aspects of clinical depression is not being to explain how it feels. I cannot emphasize enough how validating and exactly-what-I-needed-right-now this book is. It isn’t written to a specific, clinically-depressed audience, though. Ms. Lawson bravely speaks to absolutely everyone. Even those with brilliantly-balanced chemistry will be amused by these anecdotes. A walk-on of sorts also occurs in “The San Diego Zoo.” It’s a fairly innocuous title that begins when a San Diego patrolman named Chris Shea responds to a report of an armed chimpanzee at the zoo. What results earns Shea lots of YouTube notoriety, as well an excruciatingly slow-budding romance. There’s a mystery here as well, consisting of how a chimp got hold of a handgun. Shea solves this one, too, with the encouragement of another character who plays a larger role in “Crime 101” and appears yet again in “Sunset.” Una buona storia: che sarebbe anche migliore se Winslow evitasse di flirtare col lettore e non si ostinasse a voler fare motti di spirito, che gli vengono così così, non c’è nulla da fare. Ma non è finita, ci sono un paio di sorprese, due camei per così dire: il protagonista di un romanzo del 1997 (personaggio massacrato dall’omonimo film del 2007) e quello di un altro del 2006 This was a little too cliché for my taste and about as complicated as it’s similarly titled cousin, the film Taken. Jimmy and little brother Danny McNabb are both cops in New Orleans. Jimmy is violent and angry while little brother is gentle and does volunteer work at a center that gives care to abandoned chihuahuas and Yorkshire terriers, or something like that. Not much went into the little brother character.

The San Diego Zoo brings some much-needed comedy with this story of a young cop trying to arrest a gun-wielding chimp. It was genuinely funny and even sweet in parts, but still sported Winslow's cinematic style. ★★★★★ I'm a big fan of Don Winslow and not a big fan of novellas so which triumphs here? Winslow 1, novellas 0. Broken has six stories, with some characters appearing in more than one story, especially Lou the detective, and bits of surfing life. As always, Winslow's skill as a writer shine through his memorable characters. It isn’t just about Winslow’s past though because we also get a couple of great homages to crime writing legends Elmore Leonard and Raymond Chandler. The San Diego Zoo is dedicated to Leonard and most definitely feels like one of his novels while Sunset is kind of a surfer based remake of Chandler’s The Long Goodbye. Jenny: Let's change "butt" to "buttonhole." Editor: Are you sure you want to do that? Jenny: Oops, that was autocorrect. I meant let's change "butt" to "butthole." I couldn't stop laughing while reading a few sections. Like, fully-body laughter, which is rare for a book. The mix between these very funny sections and some really compelling, more serious sections was very effective and made for some moving reading. The parts of the book where Jenny Lawson talked about her struggle with depression and anxiety were very eye-opening for me, and I think it made me understand more about the struggles that people with different mental illnesses go through.Anything that didn’t thrill me? She likes vampires and that is a concept I can’t get with. Also, there’s a chapter where she talks bearcats and pee with her sister, Lisa. It seems contrived and a little self-conscious; it’s just her imagining things. I like it better when she’s telling stories of weird things that happened to her (like when the squirrel fell on her head, I kid you not.) Also, I didn’t like it that the voice of her sister sounded just like herself—maybe she should have called the other person her alter ego or something, not her sister. I recommend Broken (in the best possible way) to fans of Jenny Lawson and anyone that thinks the idea of a mix of funny stories and serious discussions of depression would be interesting.
