Description

Phil Davis’ narration of the audiobook is very good. He speaks slowly. This gives readers time to think through what is said. Every word is clearly spoken. He sings the songs that are in the book; he doesn’t just read their words. He sings well. This increases one’s enjoyment. The audio production is good too. At the start and finish we are treated to carnival music—this fits wonderfully the book’s setting and content. Four stars for the narration. The narrator spoke in a monotone for most of the story, almost as if he was sitting next to me and whispering the story in my ear. That is, when he wasn’t singing popular songs from the variety act in 1959 which the book is about. Over the course of three days more than seventy-five girls and boys looked and listened. There were collective gasps and sighs. There were nods of understanding. There was even applause at the conclusion.

Graham Swift is no common street performer — he won the Booker Prize in 1996 — but he appreciates the transcendent artistry of small works perfectly performed. His slim new novel, “Here We Are,” transports us to a seaside theater in Brighton, England, during the summer of 1959. It’s about young love and the little acts of chance and villainy that realign lives.Jeffers offers notes on how to live on planet Earth, helping the reader make sense of the world and their role in it. Here We Are encompasses the mountains and oceans, space and constellations, and the animals and people who populate the Earth. Beautiful book. As the reader, you are invited to fully immerse yourself into the intriguing wonders on Earth and beyond. The voice is calm and kind, with a hint of humour- the perfect balance. The theater is nothing special, Swift assures us, just a variety show sporting jugglers and plate-spinners, singers and ventriloquists. But the man who holds the reins is a dashing young. . . .

Moments of human intimacy jostle with scenes that inspire cosmic awe, and the broad diversity of Jeffers's candy-colored humans...underscores the twin messages that 'You're never alone on Earth' and that we're all in this together.-- Publisher's Weekly (starred review) In this video, Oliver Jeffers talks about the creation of this book. What questions would you like to ask him? The variety show setting on the Brighton Pier makes for many entertaining scenes, but always, there's a sinister threat posed by the nearby sea. We have also included an activity that your class must add in the names of the planets in the solar system.

😀 This is a useful resource that encourages your KS1 class to use the word mat to complete the sentences in a cloze style activity. Your Year 2 class will read the passage and identify nouns verbs and adjectives. You can also take one focus i.e. nouns if you feel it would better suit your Ks1 class.

How many different types of plants can you see in the book? How many animals? How many different habitats? This is a review of the audiobook edition of this novel. I had a lot of problems with this book. First off I tried to read the book which was confusing and I couldn’t get into any of the characters. So this time I tried listening, unfortunately I didn’t fare any better with this version.

Moments of human intimacy jostle with scenes that inspire cosmic awe, and the broad diversity of Jeffers’s candy-colored humans…underscores the twin messages that ‘You’re never alone on Earth’and that we’re all in this together.”– Publisher’s Weekly (starred review) Illustrated and written by artist, writer, and father Oliver Jeffers as he lovingly welcomes his child to the world. It appears likely the father has been contemplating both the miracle of life and the miracle of our fragile existence on earth. His awe-inspiring art portrays what he feels is important for his child to know about life. His words are few and message subtle. Planet earth, the starry sky and universe, the land and sea. Humanity in all its shapes, sizes, and colors, land and sea animals in all shapes, sizes, colors. A message to be kind to others, to one’s body, and to “look after the earth, as it’s all we’ve got.” From the skies to the animal kingdom to the people of the world and lots of other beautifully rendered examples of life on Earth, Here We Are carries a simple message: Be kind. -- NPR
