Weathered Oak: Top stain color is from Varathane on the bottom stain is from Minwax. It’s interesting the same stain name can result in a slightly different color. Varathane’s weathered oak from virus and has more of a warm hue, whereas weathered oak from Minwax skew more yellow. They both appress the red hue from red oak. Despite being dark, it is very transparent and still lets the grain of the wood fully appear. It settles really nicely into the lines of grain, making them extra dark. I wanted more control over the color and wanted the ability to sand and refinish down the road if we wanted or needed to!

This is a great first step to narrow down your choice without having to resand the floor, which can make it thinner and more difficult. Once you have a few strong contenders, you can test them on the actual floor. How I choose the stain for my red oak floor What do you think of our weathered wood, gray finish? I think it definitely gives off a rustic vibe and it’s perfect for how to make wood look old and gray or how to grey wash wood! It’s definitely one of the easiest ways to distress wood with paint!Weathered oak gives a worn and weathered look that would work for many different decor styles, including coastal, farmhouse, and even boho decor. Initially, I was surprised to find that our red oak floor looked so pink. Despite doing research on stain colors, when the floor company tested them on my floor, they looked different. This is because most of the online resource on stain color is based on white oak, not red oak. In fact, some stain colors can look really different between these two oak floors. First, apply pre-stain wood conditioner, letting it dry for at least 30 minutes. After that, apply golden oak gently over the wood using an old cloth dipped inside the stain. Ensure the stain does not spill. Let it dry for some time. After completing all the steps above, protect your newly created oak with a transparent film-forming topcoat. Remember that any topcoat with an amber tint will affect the final look, so it is best to buy a non-yellowing product like Minwax’s Polycrylic for this part. HI! I absolutely love this. I wanted to do this to our wall of shiplap in our front foyer. Will it work the same? If so, how long to you allow each stain to sit for before wiping? Or did you even have to do that?
