What really sets the Tenda Nova MW6 apart is its low price. True, the BT Whole Home kit costs a similar amount, but it only functions as an extender, whereas the MW6 is a fully standalone system. That makes it a terrifically cost-effective option if you’re looking to replace an underperforming router and extend your Wi-Fi coverage at the same time.

Other things we liked about the system include the fact that there are four Gigabit Ethernet ports on each unit and that these are located on the rear rather than on the base of the units, making them easier to access. There are basic parental controls here, too, however we didn’t like the way the web interface was laid out. The first 6 mm diameter concrete screw with an ETA assessment for the C1 seismic performance category for additional safety standards. It would have been nice to see a faster 2.5Gbps Ethernet port for the WAN, preparing the Deco X60 for next-gen full-fibre internet connections, but I can forgive this at this price.

Via the app, you can set profiles for each member of your family, and filter web browsing based on age. You can also enforce usage times and bedtimes or even pause a family member’s internet connection on all of their devices. It’s one of the best systems in the business and very easy to use. There’s no denying that you’ll get higher speeds and a more expansive feature set from Netgear’s Orbi RBKE963 system but that’s a phenomenally expensive mesh. The Deco XE75 provides a satisfying high-end experience for a much more sensible price. Depending on your needs, you may not need to invest in the fastest, most expensive kit you can find. Even a low-cost Wi-Fi 5 mesh system should be fast enough to deliver a connection of 40Mbits/sec or more around your home, which is plenty for working, browsing the web and even streaming 4K video. Sure, you get some compromises to hit this price, but if you need greater coverage than speed and want the latest technology the X60 does a lot of things right. The lower price of this mesh system compared to the other Wi-Fi 6 mesh devices can be seen when you look at the wireless specs. More expensive systems use a dedicated wireless link between satellites, but the X60 has single 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, which are shared between clients and as the transmission between satellites.

Each node has only a pair of network ports, there’s no USB sharing, or even a WPS button. For the price, though, the TP-Link Deco X20 is a great system with plenty of features and fast enough speeds for daily life. The special double angle on the under-head geometry increases the stability of the concrete screw during screwing in.There are some welcome software features too, including a simple firewall, a QoS setting that lets you prioritise specific devices, and time limits for kids’ devices. It’s a compact, simple and effective wireless solution and, if you shop around, you may well find it for a bargain price.

All three satellites are identical, although you have to choose one as the main device. This must be connected to your internet modem via an Ethernet connection, although if you don’t want to (or can’t) replace your existing router, you can plug the first Deco into your router instead. If you don’t replace your router, you should disable your existing Wi-Fi. The concrete screw UltraCut FBS II 6 offers the possibility for use in masonry (solid building material). A status light on the front of the satellite tells you if the satellite is connected, but you can use the app to see a better signal strength meter, and reposition your satellites if you don’t get a good connection. The Deco X60 has a four-stream 5GHz network running at a maximum of 2404Mbps (600.5Mbps a stream), but the 2.4GHz network is much slower with two 287Mbps streams (574Mbps in total). Even so, across all devices, that gives you a total of 18 streams to play with. As far as traffic management goes, that’s slightly less impressive. There’s nowhere where you can see a meaningful breakdown and analysis of who and what is using up bandwidth. There is, however, an easy to use QoS (quality of service) feature, which allows you to set certain devices as “High Priority” and prioritise certain types of traffic over others at a network level.

Decorate Your Home

It ultimately runs the risk of being a halfway house between truly affordable Wi-Fi 5 systems and the full performance of a top-range Wi-Fi 6 mesh, but if you’re looking for a budget-conscious Wi-Fi 6 system, you will find the Netgear Orbi RBK352 to be a solid choice. We test mesh Wi-Fi systems by setting them up just as you would in a regular home. The primary unit is connected directly to an incoming fibre broadband line, while the second is located according to the manufacturer’s recommendations – normally one or two rooms away. If there’s a third node, this will be placed in another room, creating either a star or daisy-chain topology. As the name suggests, mesh systems are also designed to support multiple nodes, which can be deployed in a “daisy-chain” configuration, rather than each one needing a direct connection to the router. This makes it easy to extend a wireless connection over a huge area by simply placing nodes at regular intervals around your home or workplace. Will a mesh system work with my router? The design of the concrete screw with panhead and large panhead allows for a visually aesthetic installation.

On price alone, the TP-Link Deco X60 is something of a bargain compared to other Wi-Fi 6 systems, but whether or not it’s the right system for you depends on what you need. Overall, the far more expensive Orbi Wi-Fi 6 is faster, particularly at range thanks to its dedicated wireless connection between satellites. It also has the more powerful 2.4GHz band. The countersunk head offers a flush installation and is suitable for visually appealing installations. It’s also cheaper than the other systems I’ve reviewed, showing Wi-Fi 6 prices are starting to drop.

It’s clear to see that the TP-Link Deco X60 is the more effective mesh system than the Nighthawk, especially at close range. That’s what you’d expect given the higher speed rating of the X60. Speeds in the kitchen and living room were, surprisingly, closer together but the X60 eked out a lead again outside on the patio, suggesting it’s a more effective system for larger homes. The first concrete screw with diameter 6 and variable embedment depths enables high flexibility and a precise adaption on the loads.
