About this deal

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, our love of making bath bombs genuinely has no bounds. We are always coming up with fun, simple bath bombs that are stunning because they’re easy to make, fun for us to use, and make great gifts for friends and family. Who doesn’t want a little fizzy fun in the bath or shower?!

Bath bomb making is a fantastic activity to do with the kids, but as my teen says, “Make sure they are old enough to know not to eat these bath bombs!” This was after he tried to eat my bath bombs because they “looked edible.” The teenage appetite is a crazy thing! If you want a bright colour, mica powder is the least problematic option in my opinion. While it is ground from stone so starts out natural, the bright coloured dyes that are added to it to create the bright colours usually aren’t. Lavender– This is my favourite. I just love the smell. It’s also known for being relaxing and helping little ones sleep. It softens skin and battles anxiety.

Using a squirt bottle or spoon, drizzle soap over donut bath bomb. Immediately after adding soap glaze, add sprinkles. So you might be wondering how we turned this into a STEAM project. First there is some fascinating science in bath bomb making. We cover it in detail in some of our other bath bomb activities, but in brief it is an acid-base reaction that is triggered by the addition of water. We also have emulsifiers and surfactants. The emulsifier (Polysorbate 80) makes the oils and water of the bath mix nicely. The surfactant (SLSA) helps create a luxurious foam bath. So you get the wonderful bath fizzy fun, followed by a silky, soothing foam bath.

Lemon– Is also a winning oil for colds as well as attention and focus. It promotes positive energy. Second only to how cool they look, I love how easy they are to make. It really doesn’t take long at all and you get something that looks like you put a lot of effort in. Winning! Mix everything together well. You will know when the mixture is perfect when it feels like wet sand and you can press the mixture together in your hands and it stays together. Press bath bomb mixture into the donut pan. I was able to get 5 bath bombs, with just a little bit leftover. Allow the bath bombs to dry for at least a few hours (I always leave mine overnight). Place a towel down and gently turn the pan over to release them. They should come right out, if not gently tap on the bottom of the pan. The towel provides a soft surface to land on, to prevent them from breaking.

Allow to set for at least one hour. If you plan to wrap these for gifting, I recommend leaving them overnight before wrapping to ensure everything is well set. In a small microwave safe bowl, melt your soap cubes in microwave for 15-20 seconds. If it is still not completely melted, heat for another 10 seconds. Mix between heatings. Lightly spray witch hazel until the mixture is wet enough to hold its shape if you were to grab a handful (see video above). These donut bath bombs definitely take the cake (pun absolutely intended). They’re cute, easy, and smell great! And, the best part is that you can use them as donut shower fizzies, too! Let’s get started. No Time to Make This Now? Pin it for Later If your mix isn’t dark enough, I found adding an off-white colouring gives you more control over the colour than a brown colour will.

Realizing I was developing a habit, I wanted to learn how to make my own bath bombs to save money and control the products that I was soaking in. The amount of chemicals in store bought bath bombs can be crazy. By making them yourself, you know exactly what is in it and you can ensure you are happy with every single ingredient. They Are Easy And Fun To Make Put on your gloves, then spray rubbing alcohol onto the mixture a small bit at a time to keep it from fizzing. Use your hands to stir and incorporate the alcohol into dry mixture to break down any clumps. The goal is a wet sand like consistency that just holds together with no clumps. If it's still a little dry after adding all the coconut oil and essential oils (meaning it doesn't hold together yet), add a tiny amount of water, say 1/2 of a teaspoon or a small spray and mix again. Carefully remove donut-shaped bath bombs from mold. Spread them out onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.Eucalyptus– This is another one with a strong smell which is great for colds. It’s not recommended for people who prefer more subtle smells.

Finally we have a great time bringing in some art with decorating our bath bombs. I kept things simple with this batch but the kids are already talking about using different coloured soap icing glazes so they can really get creative with their designs. This is where the fun comes in, letting their imaginations go wild! Add 1 small drop of color to mixture and mix in well. Continue to add a small drop and mix until you achieve the red velvet colour you want. I went for a more chocolate with a hint of red but create whatever you like! If your mix isn’t dark enough, I found adding an off-white colouring gives you more control over the colour than a brown colour will. In a small bowl add coconut oil and heat in a microwave for a few seconds until it melts. Add polysorbate 80 and red velvet scent. Mix wet ingredients together, then add those to the dry ingredients. One of the things we love about making bath bombs is the creativity. This donut bath bomb recipe is a great example of a fun and unique bath bomb! Lately we have really enjoyed combining soap with our bath bombs to create some extra amazing pieces. In our experience the addition of soap only makes for a better bath experience. For the holiday season we have a Grinch bath bomb with a soap heart and a beautiful icicle bath bomb. This fun and unique donut bath bomb is another great example of using soap and bath bombs together.
