After the death of her husband Gerald, Shelly became overwrought, went a little bit crazy with grief. She was afraid of being alone in the world, and the thought of finding her long lost son seemed to provide her some comfort. It was then that I noticed a change in him, a stiffening of body, an even greater sharpness in those cold, blue eyes. It was barely perceptible, but alterations in moods is another thing I’m good at recognizing – or sending. He was one of our greatest popular novelists, whose books are sold in thirty-three other languages, including Russian and Chinese. From the age of 16, Herbert attended Hornsey College of Art, where he spent four years studying graphic design, print and photography. He worked as a paste-up artist and a typographer at one advertising agency, and then became art director and subsequently group head at Charles Barker Advertising. None of the Other "others " --the demonic creatures survived in the fire broke out accidently, destroying the Perfect Rest secret wing completely, killing doctor Leonard Wisberch. So, aside from the opening, the dream sequences, the psychic, and questionable pacing, I will say there's some really good set pieces, and some decently horrific stuff that Herbert leads you through, at times almost skirting Clive Barker territory. This is my second novel by James Herbert, and I'm proud to say this one gave me a nightmare. Why am I proud to say this? I read a lot of Koontz and King and love a good thriller and naturally enjoy a bit of a fright! It's hard for a writer to make the reader 'jump' or 'get the creeps' and for me it's the mark of a great author and an excellent book! It certainly gets the adrenalin pumping and the mind racing into the wee hours. It follows that there is a skill in making a reader cry but first and foremost, I don't really enjoy deeply depressing stories, or stories that are going to upset me for days and days afterwards. Secondly, it's rare for me to cry during a movie, so for a book, this state is almost unattainable. Besides, I'd rather be scared out of my wits, or contemplating the dark side of human nature in a way that is removed from my daily life and therefore 'safe'. a b Plint, Alec (21 March 2013). "20 things you didn't know about James Herbert". The Daily Telegraph. London . Retrieved 21 March 2013. My friend and I decided to read this book together after reading the synopsis. It sounded like it would be a dark and disturbing read. Well that it was, among other things. Although I did enjoy it, I did not love it. Potter, Adam Lee (5 September 2012). "James Herbert: My new thriller about Princess Diana's secret son". Daily Express . Retrieved 1 September 2017.He always likes to bring in a bit of religion and a bit of sexual deviance...so it's not for everyone!
