About this deal

The succession of placid vignettes of that stay in the hotel in the 90s, seasoned with the inevitable home videos, try to rescue a lost paradise with weak ominous shadows that immerse the viewer in a slow and at times frankly soporific story. Aftersun also seems an inflection of Afternoon, the halfway division of the day so by extension a pivotal point in Sophie's complicated memories of her dad. It was released in the United States on 21 October 2022 and in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2022. Even with the chic and sophisticated staging, filters the father-daughter relationship doesn't fall into the stereotypes. Through Sophie's description of her fatigue the camera shifts to show his face registering a far more profound exhaustion.

Aftersun was named one of the best films of 2022 by the National Board of Review [4] and was awarded top place by Sight and Sound on its poll for the best films of 2022. Clothes, colours and music combine to create a vivid sense of time and place, and there’s a haunting, ambiguous closing sequence. Interspersed throughout the film are rave sequences set in a dark strobe-lit room where a disoriented Calum is seen dancing. Memories real and imagined fill the gaps between miniDV footage as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t.There is a non-contemporaneous shot earlier where he walks into the sea at night in Turkey, a clear signal as to his intentions, or perhaps the past when he committed suicide, just not maybe the exact place.

As time passes, and Sophie's adolescence begins to fade, she holds tight to the memories of her time with her father while she learns more about the man he really is. Perhaps it's the film's simplified depiction of reality or its overwhelming relatability that made me fall in love, and I can't get enough. Charlotte Wells’ debut feature looks embarrassingly slight on paper, its 93 minutes following a young girl on a Turkish package holiday in the late 1990s with her youthful dad. According to Paul Mescal (Calum) in a recent interview, he and Frankie Corio (Sophie) spent two weeks prior to filming in a hotel resort on holiday together to form the bond that was needed to portray the father-daughter relationship once filming began.Miami's top mob enforcer prepares to sacrifice it all, tearing down the criminal organisation he's spent his whole life building up after discovering his boss, Estelle, is putting a young runaway's.
