About this deal

Luca Costigliolo has helped spread the word through his illuminating article, his 2016 classes at Costume College, and ongoing mentorship for members of Foundations Revealed (truly, the access to the new Mentors Group alone is worth the membership fee! That "plastic boning" often comes in a fabric casing and is more transparent, with ridges running down the length of it. So although we all know that once plastic is made, it can never be 'unmade', the properties which made it useful when new, will degrade over a relatively short period of time. They’ve seen many renditions throughout the ages, as each generation improved upon the last version.

Synthetic Whalebone (German Boning) -6 sizes | Boning

From hobbyists creating modern-day equivalents, to critics who state that corsets are a health hazard, these stylish creations may be controversial – but they’re undoubtedly beautiful. If you have any questions or want to find out more about the possibilities for your industrial application, please complete the contact form and one of our experts will be in touch. Keep an eye out for opportunities to view extant garments (historical clothing that has survived to the modern-day), whether they be from museum viewings or from displays from clothing collections. Spiral steel provides a complete 360 range of flexibility, which allows a flexible fit and curved channels in later Victorian corset styles. Confusingly, Wissner offers another product which in English is usually referred to as "German Plastic Boning. The steel will never rust if the garment is looked after properly and also because it is galvanised to protect against rusting and because of it's structure (two flattened springs squashed together) it's properties will not change over time.

Perhaps my favorite thing about synthetic whalebone is that it allows for fully boned stays without the inconsistencies and breakage of reed, and without the weight of fully boned steel stays (which is something we just won't do). Use if for children's costumes and bodices and one of it's great characteristics is that it can be sewn through easily. As you can see from this particular example, this dress foundation is doing alot of work - As a whole it is transforming the body by smoothing the torso with the corsolette and creating the illusion of larger hips with the petticoats and panniers. In that case you’d continue pattern piece number 3 all the way up and cut it on the fold, and the cups would start maybe 1cm or 3/8in.For Victorian corsets, it allows us to copy the numerous lines of bones seen on extants, again without adding the weight of steel. So the boning will be enough by itself to maintain the bodice up, if that’s what you were wondering. You could add them directly to the wrong side of the main layer of the bodice, although it’s better to create a separate layer underneath and insert the boning to that. For example, corsets that were made for sports tended to be simpler and less rigid, thus allowing for greater movement. It is possible to use plastic whalebone for the same purpose and with the same effect but the integrity of the material over time is not so guaranteed and of course where steel could rust if not looked after, plastic can warp if not looked after.
