A fitting farewell, still funny, acute, and positive in its view of human nature even in its 37th episode.

At Eleven o’clock there was a knock on the door; it was madam Eleven O’clock but they did not answer. Of course, Harry isn’t as blasé about the move as he pretends, and eyes aren’t exactly dry when he departs. In her first book, Kang's palette contains only browns, grays, yellows, and redsmuted colors, forming the geometric interiors of barren apartments. A woman named Helen, remembering her ninth birthday, still regrets the angry comment she made that day to her Jewish friend Lydia -- who disappeared the next morning when the Nazis began rounding up the Jews and arresting them. I will discuss with the students that we always want to be nice to our friends because they may have different situations going on with them, such as Lydia being a Jew and being taken away. Helen has a best friend by the name of Lydia and Helen begins to wonder many things about her friend.

I would also use this book to teach student's that we should not say mean things even if we are angry because we cannot take it back and will regret it later. The pastel pictures in sepia tones are understated, with an old-fashioned, almost childlike simplicity. Jo Hoestlandt does well in providing a personal touch to tell her past experience from the perspective of Helen. In the story the idea of the star symbolizing hope and fear is repeated adding to the mournful atmosphere of the story. This poignant account of childhood innocence destroyed by the Nazi occupation of France touches both heart and mind. In contrast to the quiet pictures of the children together inside the house, there's a climactic double-page street scene of a long column of people carrying suitcases and being marched away by the French police. But when a fearful woman appears at Helen's house, Lydia suddenly wants to go home early, and Helen can't understand why. Recommend: I would recommend this book because even though it is about a serious and painful topic, children need to know what happened and how many people were affected by World War II. I liked that the story included Madam Eleven O'Clock and the Midnight Ghost who were Jews trying to hide using code names, adding fear and tension to the story.

From his desk he pulls a burned hot dog and other items that featured in past episodes, says goodbye to Song Lee and other classmates, and even (for the first time ever) leads Doug and readers into his house and memento-strewn room for further reminiscing. As a result of this layering of perspective, the characters and story have depth through minimal means (sketchy details, snatches of conversation). I also appreciate Johanna Kang, the illustrator, for incorporating simplistic pictures that relate well to the story. However, it could send a very powerful message to my older students both about the Holocaust as well as how important it is to not say mean things to our friends because we never know when we may see them again. It is a great book that can help young kids to understand the holocaust without needing to go into gory detail! When the girl has to leave her friends house the friend becomes very upset with her and then they never see each other again. I appreciate that this book is written from the viewpoint of an elderly lady reflecting on her experience as a young child.

Secrets and lies abound in Echenoz's latest wry sendup of the spy thriller, which features a mysterious colonel, a reluctant secret agent, a magnetic beauty and a vanished husband. This story, which is translated from French can be shared with older students during a Holocaust unit to show the different perspectives of the Holocaust; one from a non-Jewish child and a non-Jewish family. When a stranger wearing a yellow star like Lydia's comes looking for a place to hide, Lydia suddenly wants to go home. In a powerful marriage of art and text, the simple, spare lines and muted tones of Kang's illustrations quietly support the poignant story. Then later another knock and a male voice said that he was the Midnight Ghost but again the girls did not answer the door. Helen tells the story reflecting on the time she was a young girl who at the time didn’t fully understand the events that led to her friend’s disappearance.
