About this deal

Do you remember the water buffalo at the end of our street, or the deep-sea diver we found near the underpass? Note the tiny handwritten note at the bottom of the slip with all the names, saying “In Memory of Eddie”, followed by a title in fancy print ”budgie champion”. And yet it's beautifully grounded in the rivalry of siblinghood, in which winning or losing an argument with your brother counts for more than discovering that the world really is flat after all. Shaun Tan follows The Arrival with a collection of off-the-wall tales combined with his genius illustrations in a unique hybrid format that will build on our current success.

That kind of moment is what Shaun Tan excels at, and that's what makes this collection so charming, and so memorable. Shaun Tan Picture Book Analysis | SLAP HAPPY LARRY Eric by Shaun Tan Picture Book Analysis | SLAP HAPPY LARRY

I’ve been meaning to take a closer look at the picture books of Australian Shaun Tan for a long time.

This was performed in the Opera House in Sydney, The Melbourne Recital Centre and Her Majesty's Theatre in Adelaide. Furthermore, the word “brutalism” has intense connotations, even though it’s not actually related to “brutality. Because it is a much quieter book than The Arrival and can’t glom onto an existing community like the graphic novel advocates, my suspicion is that Tales from Outer Suburbia will make a relatively smaller splash. The images are reminiscent of medieval paintings, but with the addition of contemporary Australiana, notably the Hill’s Hoist clothes lines. Hence, on a deeper level, the elephant can be seen as reality, and we are all the blind men, each of us able to perceive only a tiny part of a much greater whole.

Yet on closer examination, the book’s inter-relationship of text and image is as complex as its contemporaries; being playful whilst simultaneously breaking boundaries. Because complex problems rarely resolve completely, the best books tend to haunt and unnerve readers even as they edify and entertain. Although everyone is delighted with the arrangement, cultural misunderstandings ensure, beginning with Eric's insistence on sleeping in a pantry cupboard rather than a specially prepared guest room. But the sidewalks on my grandmother’s street were different, they were like the ruins of ancient Rome, purified and ennobled by time, baked clean by the sun. This isn’t anything like the suburbs where I grew up, and where I live now, with houses packed in tightly together to save a little on sprawl. A small alien-like exchange student comes to stay with a family and his unique and surprising parting gift is illustrated by a stunning doublepage-spread.
