It’s only when Jasper finally admits to himself that maybe he’s not such a big rabbit after all that he thinks of a clever solution to his fear of the dark. If picture books have been breaking down the fourth wall for years, why not break out the experimental theatrical performances? I am imagining a lot of people may not love this because you don't always know what is going on, or why; it seems surreal or at least strange, but that's in part why I like it.

The Rock from the Sky: Klassen, Jon, Klassen, Jon

His long list of prestigious honours includes the American Caldecott Medal and CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal (both for This Is Not My Hat, which he wrote and illustrated), as well as the Governor General's Literary Award for children's literature — illustration for Cats' Night Out written by Caroline Stutson. The exploration of minimalistic conflict, challenges of divided and disjointed communication and the potential harms that it can amplify and create, and crucially the retooling of the overarching apocalyptic themes to cement the main narratives of joy, trust and harmonious cohabitation within constantly changing landscapes are what once again bring Jon Klassen a class above the rest in this genre. So much so that, after reading “The Rock From the Sky,” even adults may be tempted to start looking around them in that shifty, Jon Klassen-ian way.

And [editor] Liz [Bicknell] and Ann [Stott, the art director] said, “No, this third story is your book. The audience has to do work there, because the character is probably going through something, but doesn’t want to show it. Despite his “I’m a big rabbit” assertion, that glow creeps him out, so he stuffs them in the hamper and dons Plain White. A unique voice and wryly humorous illustrations will leave you smiling at this wonderful tale of aardvarks, broccoli, string and friendship. The Rock from the Sky is a great story for adults to read aloud, and a great story for young readers to stretch their growing abilities. The first and third story in The Rock from the Sky—the one about the falling rock, and then the one about the sunset—are actually from before the third hat book.

Jon Klassen Meets Samuel Beckett in a Hilariously Dark

The sky was a huge piece of canvas they tacked to the floor and we pushed brooms, pushing color around on the floor, and it didn’t look like anything. Nothing much ever really happens in a Klassen book but what does happen is gripping, relatable and complexly hilarious.

Montage like illustrations fit well with this simple tale of adaptation in a time of inevitable change - that is coming fast. Let me put it this way then: Would you like to read a book that will make you laugh and your kids laugh, and all of you are laughing for real, no one faking it, and enjoying this book for the exact same reasons?

The Rock from the Sky by Jon Klassen | Goodreads

Is the land around the rock really leafing out with plants and trees, and has an alien actually stalked into view?I finally found two or three washes that I liked that didn’t offend me, that were softer and specklier. I liked the developing dread even while I was laughing at/with the three friends, I mean, the cranky turtle and the armadillo and snake, who deal with a big, unexpected intrusion into their lives, and their later musings. Wacky, witty fun, this could be used to introduce a unit on humor, all done in classic Klassen digital and watercolor tones and shapes.
