On hot days, it vents well and allows ample air flow. On days cold enough to snow, a good base layer beanie was enough to prevent all that air flow from freezing my noggin. I’ve worn plenty of helmets that fit great one way or the other, but to be able to fit comfortably either with or without another lay underneath (and cram MIPS in there, too) is noteworthy. If you want to get a good helmet which is not only comfortable but also affordable, Giro Cinder and Foray are two amazing choices to consider out there. Both of them are a solid option for almost any road cyclist that in our opinion what sets them apart is probably on personal taste or choice and what makes many are so interested to have one of them is actually for the price point itself since despite being affordable, they are not far behind high-end models. One of the tradeoffs Giro makes here is providing improved durability by adding more structural support to the helmet while sacrificing a bit of ventilation. However, the Cinder receives overall average scores in the rating metric due to the amount of EPS foam that is exposed around the brim of the helmet. EPS foam is a more delicate material that the protective polycarbonate shell, and is vulnerable to bumps and scrapes if not properly cared for. Value The Synthe has made a name for itself in combining aerodynamics with effective ventilation, too - and the Cinder doesn't quite have the same edge. Both helmets are EN1078 certified, which is one of the main things that any helmet at least should comply with, thus ensuring a certain level of protection. MIPS is an added protection that reduces rotational forces on angled impacts and therefore reduces the chance of concussions. But MIPS testing is still not included in the certification process of helmets, meaning the effectiveness of these implementations to reduce rotational forces can vary greatly. The added MIPS layer in the Giro Cinder.

Storing sunglasses in my helmet isn’t something that I do that often, but I did find it a bit annoying that I couldn’t put my glasses anywhere if they kept fogging up. You can put your sunglasses in the vents but they won’t stay nearly as securely in the vents, if at all. Enough clearance, even with the 100% Speedcraft. Depending on the brand their sizing can be different as well but usually extra small is below 20- inches, medium, from 21.75 inches, and large from 23.25 inches. To know this measurement, just use a flexible tape and measure your head circumference at about an inch above the eyebrow. Bike Helmet TypeThis is the most important point in our opinion because a helmet must sit well on your head to offer the optimum protection it has; just like how a seatbelt must fit on the passenger’s body. A good fit helmet will feel snug on your head without pressure points and doesn’t move around too but to get the best fit for a different head shape is not something a fixed system can do. This is why usually bike helmets will have an adjustable fit that conforms to head shape. Moving further, let’s see what Giro Cinder and Foray can offer and we want to start with their build quality first. As road helmets that are quite light in our opinion, the concern is always about exposed foam since lighter helmets use less plastic and this is why you can see some exposed foam especially on the lower brim of these models which may reduce the longevity as it makes them more prone to dent or chip when transported often. Charged as the spending rendition of Giro Synthe, Giro Cinder MIPS highlights a significant number of the superior highlights of its steady mate, at a sniff of the expense. There is a ladies’ adjustment as well. The Giro Cinder Mips uses their Roc Loc 5 retention mech, which adjusts the tightness and the height of the cradle. It’s also ponytail friendly. In-Mould Construction In-mould construction fuses a tough polycarbonate outer shell with the helmet’s impact-absorbing foam liner. The fusion process allows Giro to sculpt better ventilation systems, so In-mould helmets can be lighter and cooler than traditional helmets.

decide if the Cinder is the right bike helmet for you. Taking a Closer Look at the Giro Cinder MIPS Helmet In 2015 MEA Forensic reported on their extensive testing of used (but not crashed) bicycle helmets shows that the foam liners retain their performance over many years. Some of the helmets were as old as 26 years. They crash tested 675 helmets in their lab. Their analysis showed that there was no significant impact performance change with age.” Giro Cinder Fit However, one of the other USPs of the Synthe has always been its ability to provide an aero lid that looks stylish - and the Cinder MIPS is anexcellent looking helmet with near universal appeal. When you have found the circumference we can further narrow your option based on the riding discipline. Based on where you ride we can separate them between road and mountain bike helmet. Road helmets are designed to be half lid and they must be light as well as comfortable due to the nature of road cycling that may take a longer time pedaling or for daily commuting but the longer you go the more protection as well in the unit such as for cross country. One, the Cinder just feels more comfortable to me, perhaps because the weight of the helmet is distributed throughout the inside, inside of resting on just the 360-degree plastic Roc Loc Air band. You get, as you'd no doubt expect, an expanded polystyrene shell with a polycarbonate shell. Nothing out of the ordinary here but an added bonus is the thermoplastic skeleton that'll keep the helmet together after that initial impact. In the past I've crashed a similar helmet and the skeletal structure certainly held it together, so that if I'd bounced from road to kerb for the secondary clout, my head was likely to have still been protected. The Cinder MIPS is mid-range helmet that is not far of the high end Synthe helmet. Yes, the Synthe is a better helmet, it fits better, looks better, has better airflow and has a nicer finish. But still…is it €150 euro’s better? If you have the money to spend and the helmet it fits well, then it’s a no-brainer. But if its more value for money you look for, then the Cinder is definitely a better choice. A pretty good deal, if the Giro Cinder fits you. Giro Cinder comes in at 168 USD with MIPS, or 129 USD without – contrasted with Giro Synthe which maximizes at 323 USD. What else is the difference between the two? Streamlined features, weight, and breathability. The Cinder’s (left two) solid pad and underlying MIPS liner sit flush against the foam. The Synthe’s ventilated pad sits out from the foam atop the white Roc Loc Air retention system Ben Delaney / Immediate Media

carry this thought over to the final section as we wrap things up. Is the Giro Cinder MIPS Helmet a Good Overall Value? Padding is minimal, but effective. Worth noting is the adjustable meeting point of the straps under your ears. There are more and more helmets coming with that being a fixed, non-adjustable point, most of which are just fine, but it’s nice being able to dial it in exactly how you want. There’s a lot to like about the Giro Cinder. Personally, I think it looks killer from every angle – thoroughly modern, and aero-looking with sharp lines. Giro doesn’t make any specific aero claims about this helmet, but it seems rather streamlined when riding, without creating undue wind noise regardless of head angle.Giro Synthe has become well known in consolidating streamlined features with compelling ventilation, as well – and Giro Cinder does not exactly have a similar edge. Another factor that set Foray as the more comfortable option is probably the lighter weight so wearing them doesn’t feel like a task and for those who are used to heavier helmets, you may not realize they have been sitting on your head as well. Giro Cinder Vs Foray The Giro Cinder and Ember MIPS are the little brother and sister of the Giro Synthe MIPS. Where the Cinder has been introduced as a men’s helmet, the Ember is introduced at a later point as a women’s helmet with only the esthetics to differentiate itself. The Cinder and Ember, different colors but the same helmet.

Outwardly, the two are very comparative, and keeping in mind that there are little contrasts in the size and state of the vents, the fundamental distinction in wind stream exists in both helmets. So Roc Loc Air is better than Roc Loc 5, right? Well, here’s the thing: over months of testing I have found myself grabbing the Cinder over the Synthe most of the time for a couple of reasons. So, Roc Loc Air is superior to Roc Loc 5, right? All things considered, stop and think for a minute: over long periods of testing, many people have ended up getting Giro Cinder over the Synthe more often than not for two or three reasons. Giro has selected to utilize a Roc Loc 5 conclusion framework. This is effectively movable with one hand and considers minute changes in any case. The Mips system is designed to provide added safety for helmets in many accidents. For certain impacts, the Mips system can reduce harmful rotational motion that might otherwise be transferred to the user’s head.
