Description

After long or stressful workdays, he found solace in unfolding his narratives, a therapeutic endeavor that helped him unwind and relax. Also I feel the supporting characters of Darmour, Orjan and Navi could've been better off being introduced much earlier - I found them to be pretty interesting. While the concept for his first novel was conceived six years ago, it was the nightly ritual of crafting bedtime stories for his children that really empowered him to breathe life into it. I was a little sceptical at first as I knew it was set in the same realm but a completely different story. The world could be very interesting - while not being overly creative since it relies so heavily on stories/myth that already exists - putting it together in this way could be amazing.

These stories aren't especially long compared to some of the epics I am used to reading and I am quite enjoying the punchy style this author brings to the table.Apart from the main cast there were some notable side characters but unfortunately most of the side characters felt like replaceable cannon fodder without distinct personalities. I could barely follow the characters on their adventure because of all the deaths, I mean people were dropping like flies.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Beswick's writing is similar to the first book in that it's simple, easy to access, cliché in places, but will surprise you with poignancy at times. This book and me on the edge of my seat till the very last word and (*spoiler-ish*) That ending, I was not ready for. The characters on the horse, two of which are soaking wet, don't notice that they're soaking wet until after they 'stop to rest the horse' and have a conversation where they politely introduce themselves to each other. I tried to give this second book a chance after listening to the first one but I found myself genuinely uninterested in finishing it. I can tell you everything you want to know about Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan, but I can't even name a secondary character from movies 4 or 5. Things don't work out as planned and he and his sister Esara and friend Zerina which is also accused of being a witch and has also lost her two sisters. When there was action it was good, and I am thankful that there wasn’t a ton of filler, but I also kinda of missed a little more exposition and settling into the story. I wanted more about Zerina getting to know Ulrik, and really solidify the relationship between the three main characters. Instead, we have another group of characters who were unlikeable or at best characters I was indifferent to.I will get to book three only to see if we revisit book one characters or if we get any closer to tying it all together. Some of them had nice interactions on the (very short, page count-wise) sailing section and then we get to the end and watch half of them get slaughtered in an attack and I couldn't even tell you their names.
